Gent (1795-present)
- The city of Ghent has been regulary, from 1876 on, enlarged with parts of the surrounding municipalities.
- The city is now divided in districts (click here for a map).

- the relation of this sectors to the 9 police area and the 60 neighborhoods in 1970 and

- The following municipalities where attached to the city:
- in 1965: Destelbonk, Mendonk, Sint-Kruis-Winkel
- in 1977: Afsnee, Drongen, Gentbrugge, Ledeberg, Mariakerke, Oostakker, Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Wondelgem, Zwijnaarde, Sint-Amandsberg.
Ancien Régime (until 1795)
Ghent was one of the four main cities of the Earldom "County of Flanders".
