The French speaking administrative district of SOIGNIES (ZINNIK in Dutch) was created in 1818 from municipalities of the districts MONS and TOURNAI. The municipality Oeudeghien was transferred to the district of Ath in 1952. When the linguistic boder was created in 1963, the Dutch speaking municipalities of Sint-Pieters-Kapelle and Bever-bij-Lessen have been transferred to the province of Brabant.
From 1977 on
- The district is now composed of the following municipalities:
- Braine-le-Comte ('s Gravenbrakel), Ecaussinnes, Enghien (Edingen), La Louviere, Le Roeulx, Lessines (Lessen), Silly (Opzullik), Soignies (Zinnik).
