Sombreffe Castle, SOMBREFFE, Belgium
October 1999

Provided by André Bodart. THANKS, André!!

"The Sombreffe Castle dates from the 13, or even 12th, century. Godefroid d'Orbais is the first well-known owner of the Sombreffe barony. After him, we find a lot of other families: Count de Vernembourg, de Manderscheyt, de Culembourg, de Lalaing, de Lannoy, etc. One of the "most beautiful stories" about the castle (I think) happened in +/-1850 when one of the successive owners (the name is not in the book I have...) after a performance (a play in the castle), threw a bunch of flowers at the actress' feet that contained the castle title deed.....she sold the castle again. Now it's an historical monument, belonging to the State. A doctor lives there; there is also a restaurant, and an art gallery; but they aren't allowed to change something or other aesthetically." André Bodart provided these wonderful pictures. THANKS, André!!
