Creation 1816
The district was created with the following groups of municipalities, of different origin:
- 1. The original municipalities, until the reform of 1977:
- Agimont, Anthée, Aublian, Berzée, Biesmerée, Castillon, Cerfontaine, Chastrès, Clermont-chez-Walcourt, Corenne, Dailly, Daussois, Dourbes, Fagnolle, Flavion, Florennes, Fontenelle, Fraire, Franchimont, Gochenée, Gonrieux, Gourdinne, Gomezée (1796-1825), Hanzinelle, Hanzinne, Hemptinne-chez-Philippeville, Hermeton-sur-Meuse, Jamiolle, Laneffe, Matagne-la-Grande, Merlemont, Moorialmé, Neuville-chez-Philippeville, Nismes, Olloy-sur-Viroin, Omezée, Oret, Pesche, Pry, Rognée, Roly, Rosée, Saint-Aubin, Saint-Maert (1796-1819), Samart, Sart-en-Fagne, Sautour, Senzelle, Serville, Silenrieux, Somzée, Soulme, Soumoy, Stave, Surice, Tarcienne, Thy-la-Bauduin, Thy-le-Château, Vierves-sur-Viroin, Villers-Deux-Eglises, Villers-en-Fagne, Villers-le-Gambon, Vodecée, Vodelée, Vogenée, Walcourt, Yves (1796-1825).

- Boussu-en-Fagne (1816-1976), Couvin (1816-1976), Doische (1816-1976), Gimnée (1816-1976), Le Mesnil (1816-1976), Matagne-la-Petite (1816-1976), Mazée (1816-1976), Niverlée (1816-1976), Oignies-en-Thiérache (1816-1976), Petigny (1816-1976), Romerée (1816-1976), Treignies (1816-1976), Vaucelles (1816-1976).
- 3. The municipaltites, that did remain French from 1814 until 1816, and where French before 1792 :
- Frasnes (1816-1976), Jamagne (1816-1976), Mariembourg (1816-1976), Philippeville (1816-1976).
Changes 1819-1913
- Saint-Maert (1796-1819) was suppressed in 1819 (344 inhabitants) and his parts attached to Fraire, Gourdinne, Laneffe and Somzée.
- Gomezée (1796-1825) and Yves (1796-1825) did form the new municipality Yves-Gouzemée (1825-1976).
- Brûly (1826-1976), created in 1826 with parts of Couvin,
- Cul-des-Sarts (1826-1976), created in 1826 with parts of Couvin.
- Petite-Chapelle (1837-1976), created in 1837 from parts of Brûly.
- Brûly-de-Pesche (1867-1976), created in 1867 from parts of Pesche.
- Morville (1892-1976), created in 1892 from parts of Anthée.
- Romedenne (1901-1976), created in 1901 from parts of Surice.
- Presgaux (1913-1976), created in 1913 from parts of Gonrieux.
Period 1977-now
The district is now subdivided in 7 municipalities. These incorporated in 1977 the other municipalities, as listed here.
