King Leopold I and Queen Louise-Marie
Leopold Georg Christian Friedrich, King of the Belgians.
Born at Coburg on 16 December 1790, dies at Laken on 10 December 1865.
Son of Prince Franz Anton, Duke of SAXONY-COBURG-GOTHA, and of Augusta Caroline, Princess of Reuss-Ebersdorff.
Joined the Russian army in 1813. After the defeat of the French in 1815, accompanied Czar Alexander I to Paris and to England.
After having obtained the English nationality, he married on 2 May 1816 Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817; from the house of HANNOVER), the daughter of Prince-Regent George IV of Great Britain and Ireland, and his presumed heir to the throne. Charlotte died on 6 November 1817 after having given birth to a stillborn child. It was her death which caused King George III's younger sons to search quickly for wives; the Duke of Kent choosing Leopold's sister Victoria; they became parents of Queen Victoria). Leopold remained in England, where he resided at the estate of Claremont, near London.
Having been deprived of the chance to be King Consort of Great Britain by the death of his first wife, Leopold had already considered the thrones of Mexico and Greece. Later he helped his nephews ascend the thrones of Britain and Portugal, and he was a main advisor to his niece, Queen Victoria.
He accepted the Belgian throne that had been offered to him by the Belgian National Congress on June 4.
Elected King of the Belgians on 4 June 1831 by the National Congress of Belgium, Accepted the crown on July 12; inauguration and constitutional oath, Brussels 21 July 1831.
Second marriage on 9 August 1832 to Louise-Marie Thérèse Charlotte Isabelle, Princess of ORLEANS, born at Palermo on 3 April 1812; dies at Oostende on 11 October 1850, daughter of Louis-Philippe, King of France.
He had an excellent relationship with his niece Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland, the daughter of one of his sisters, and spouse of his cousin Albert of SAXONY-COBURG-GOTHA.
