Mechelen
VVF
Link - Mechelen Conscripts for the French Army, 1798-1814 ~ Between 1797 (when Belgium
was released from Austrian control) and 1814 (when it combined with the Netherlands),
Belgium was under French control. In those Revolutionary times, France levied a tariff,
requiring a certain number of Belgian men to serve the French military cause.
The Mechelen Archives has data on about 2,000 of these conscripts from their area
(about midway between Antwerp and Brussels), and has posted an index to over 1,600
of these to the Web. The index is arranged alphabetically by surname,
with the complete name of each conscript, his date of birth, occupation, and a source reference.
