In 1892 the Belgian government appointed Mr. Eugene VENESOEN as the head of the Emigration Service in Antwerp. In August 1896, Mr. Venesoen started his interviews of the Belgian emigrants (only those of the third class !!), on which he made monthly reports to the Ministry in Brussels. The first reports only mention the name, the occupation, and the destination of the emigrant. As from 1899, the interviews are extended. The last rapport's are dated May 1914. After this date Venesoen retired.A typical record for the year 1901:
SS Southwark to New York 5 January 1901 5359 Edouard VERACHTERT, age 22, from Merksem, cooper. Travels to Norway, Michigan, to his brother, Louis VERACHTERT, see nr. 3787.
