Introduction

For some time now I have been collecting information on those Belgians living in Scott County Missouri who served in the US Civil War. These men all served on the Union side; I found no indication that any Belgian from there was on the Confederate side. Moreland Township, where most of these Belgians lived, was primarily for the Union. In Edison Shrum's The History of Scott County Missouri Up to the year 1880, he says, "There were only two enclaves or islands of Union sympathizers in Scott County during the Civil War, one of these of course was the German settlement around New Hamburg, and the other was at Commerce, and north along the river to Gray's Point, where, during the 1840s and 1850s, a German settlement had developed around the then dying village of New York." Most of the people in my file lived in the New Hamburg area.
Even though I still consider this a work in progress, I decided it was time to send it on to those who may have a use for the information.
